Board Certification Pathway
Step 1: Maintain Active Membership
Stay in good standing as an active ABEIM member by upholding the Code of Professional Conduct and maintaining annual dues.
Activate your Member Portal to set personal goals, access your self-assessment rubric, and begin tracking progress after clinical sessions.
Step 2: Complete the HCx Credential
Earn the Healthcare Experience (HCx) credential through PracticingTLC.com.
HCx provides structured, evidence-based training in communication, empathy, and engagement — the core competencies of emotionally intelligent care.
Step 3: Demonstrate Patient-Reported Excellence
Gather patient feedback through your unique ABEIM link or QR code.
To qualify:
Maintain a 4.0★ (or higher) average rating
Over one continuous year or at least 365 verified patient ratings
This patient-driven metric ensures your certification reflects real, sustained excellence in bedside connection and communication.
Certification Requirements (Summary)
- Membership: Active ABEIM member in good standing
- Credential: Completed Healthcare Experience (HCx) credential
- Patient Ratings: ≥ 4.0★ average
- Duration / Count: 1 continuous year of ≥ 365 verified ratings
- Mentorship: Sponsored & coached two clinicians
- Portfolio: Reflective report with outcomes & feedback
- Review: Oral/practical review (if required)
- Recertification: Every 3 years with continued excellence & CME equivalents

Step 5: Reflect and Submit Portfolio
Submit a concise reflective portfolio summarizing your:
Key lessons and learning insights
Aggregated and de-identified patient feedback themes
Specific changes or improvements in practice
Coaching attestations and mentorship outcomes
This portfolio demonstrates both measurable progress and professional maturity.
Step 6: Review and Certification
Once your portfolio is complete, an oral or practical review may be requested.
After successful evaluation, you will be formally recognized as:
